In July 2023 I meet briefly with the Executive Director of Hopewell House. In a context that I anticipated as 'dialog', the ED conveyed that after a concluded investigation involving unidentified members of the community who held strong adverse feelings about my behaviors, she had 'lost trust' in my 'judgement concerning personal boundaries'. The ED had no questions for me. I was directed to surrender my House key and volunteer name badge.
After a second round of investigation by FHH in August 2023, I had not yet been informed of the specific nature of the claims or allegations.
Despite repeated assertions by FHH Executives that “I stepped away” and "I know what I did" (expressed to me, and to members of the FHH community), in fact I did not know the nature of alleged conduct warranting my dismissal.
I can not agree with what I do not know. I do not ask to be returned to service but do ask that the reasons for my expulsion be explained to me. Over 30-some years I have supported the mission embodied in the work of the House, and I remain in admiration of the people devoted to the work that unfolds there.
PeterOctober 2nd 2023 On October 20th, a member of the FHH Executive Committee met with Peter. This is part of my 10/31 acknowledgement of that session: " J**** conveyed something of an executive summary of the case. As we moved through the high level materials, we described omissions, inaccuracies, falsehoods, failures, unknowns, absent representations, and assertions that I would, should the opportunity arise under oath, refute. In fact, we saw that the decision to expel me from the volunteer community was based on one person’s direct and incompletely described experience, influenced by a body of storytelling designed to threaten FHH’s reputation in the community. That I and others directly involved in this story were not consulted in the supply of basic facts is an indication of powerful motivating influences that are yet to be described.
Should the EC see fit to establish programing that would address the obvious problems this case has revealed in the organization's capability to address conflict (a basic for an operation that endeavors to produce value in one of the most rich and turbulent of human theaters), I will be happy to participate in such a process. As always, my deepest intentions are aligned with the success of the mission embodied in the work of the House."
